Lesson Postponed: The XXXorcist Screens Theatrically This Weekend!

October 26, 2006

Well I was going to teach you how to make a more advanced gore mixture this week, but I’ve been bogged down promoting the hell out of The XXXorcist. After a year of work, the film came out on DVD last week and opens theatrically in Philly for a week tomorrow! We’ve also got screenings in NY, LA and Atlanta GA, with more to come, and I’m really excited to see the crowd reactions!

Since I am currently doing this, I may as well tell you now…once you finish your movie (whatever kind of movie it is), your job is not done, not by a long shot! You still have tons of marketing and promotions to do! First you’ve got to come up with an attractive cover design and the right wording for the synopsis and press release, make the official website, and in this day and age, the Myspace Film Page (I hate to say it, but Myspace is becoming one of the best ways to promote nearly anything!). You could hire a press agent to handle your entire PR, but even then you need to work very closely with them because only you as the director truly knows the project. I’m a very hands-on person with all my projects; I don’t feel comfortable handing anything off to anyone entirely…I have to be in control!

Also, I always do some kind of theatrical release with all of my films. Not only does it get your movie to a different audience, it’s great publicity for the DVD. If you can get a week theatrical run in any area, in most cases you can get reviewed in all the major daily and weekly publications. I learned this while doing marketing at Troma for their films and built relationships with theater owners, so when I started making my own movies, I knew how to market it to them!

And when the DVD hits stores, you should work closely with your distributor to make sure there are special promotions in place when it comes out. Make sure it’s on the new release rack, in the right section or even has some kind of display…you can set up in-store signings if you have name actors or people the public would be interested in meeting in your films (in my case it happens to be porn stars with this release).

There is a LOT more to say on this subject, I just gave you an abridged version because I have to get back to promoting my movie! If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!

Blood is law!
